I believe I've written about my weakness in buying books based on their cover, especially young adults books. Buying Twilight was one of the downside of this cover fetish thing of mine, but fortunately that wasn't the case with Sarah Dessen's Along For The Ride. I like it, which then brought me to read This Lullaby, Lock and Key, Just listen, and The Truth About Forever.
I love reading young adults books they're often simple yet entertaining. And I found Sarah Dessen's writing was exceptionally fine for this genre, especially when it comes to character. Her forte is always her characters, the characterization is what so special about Dessen's books. They're almost always coming-of-age girl, you need to care about their character and how they grow up through out the book in order to enjoy the story. Every one of them, from the 5 books that I've read, had their own distinct personality, that you eventually will feel like you know them for ages, you can pictured their expression & gesture in your head.
Other thing about Sarah Dessen, she doesn't write about some fantasy and supernatural things. Her story & the setting was always pretty realistic, that you can relate to. They had just enough romance, but not too sappy or cheesy. And you can always learn something, especial if you are a young adult. Great books to read on vacation, by the pool or beach. Here's the 5 books that I've read, in order of which I like most.
"I am coming to terms with the fact that loving someone requires a leap of faith, and that a soft landing is never guaranteed." — Sarah Dessen
"Music is a total constant. That's why we have such a strong visceral connection to it, you know? Because a song can take you back instantly to a moment, or a place, or even a person. No matter what else has changed in your or the world, that one song says the same, just like that moment." — Sarah Dessen
"It's a lot easier to be lost than found. It's the reason we're always searching and rarely discovered--so many locks not enough keys." — Sarah Dessen
"I don't know. Just because someone's pretty doesn't mean she's decent. Or vice versa. I'm not into appearances. I like flaws, I think they made things interesting. — Sarah Dessen
